Safeguarding

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding children is the process of protecting children from abuse, neglect, and other harm, and ensuring they grow up in a safe and supportive environment:

  • Ensuring safe care

Safeguarding children ensures that they grow up in a safe and effective care environment, ideally within their family.

  • Enabling the best outcomes

Safeguarding children aims to ensure that all children have the best outcomes and can enter adulthood successfully.

  • Protecting from abuse

Safeguarding children includes protecting them from physical abuse, such as hitting or slapping, and emotional abuse, such as threats of harm or humiliation.

  • Preventing harm

Safeguarding children aims to prevent harm to their health and development.

  • Providing support

Safeguarding children includes providing support to meet their needs when problems arise.

Safeguarding children is a collective responsibility, and organizations that work with children are required to collaborate to safeguard children. Child protection is part of the safeguarding process, and focuses on protecting individual children who are identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.
